The clacking of heels on stone, the smell of fresh hay mixed with afternoon air, maids and peddlers walking among dukes and duchesses, and the mouth-watering smell of wild game roasting over an open fire.

From the moment you arrive in the historical district of Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will feel as though you have travelled through time. The enchanting and historical architecture, mixed with jovial locals, fancy costumes, and delicious food make the New France Festival (August 1st - 4th, 2019) an event not-to-be-missed. The perfect festival for lovers of history, culture and food!

Eat: Rustic and Local Eats

From giant barbecue turkey legs to Québec terroir, eating at the New France Festival is a fun and delicious part of the festival experience. Visit the various stalls set up throughout the festival to nibble on samples of Québec terroir made by local producers. There are plenty of different local foods to try and enjoy as you wander around the New France Festival.

Feeling hungry? Visit the festival’s outdoor food court, grab a pint of local craft beer, sit down and enjoy a meal in a unique setting.

Play: Dress up as Nobility

Dressing up in 17th and 18th-century costumes is not a requirement, but it is definitely one of the best ways to dive into the heart and soul of the New France Festival. Show up dressed as nobility, with all their gorgeous layers or keep it simple and dress as a maid or a colonist, or come as yourself and admire those who are dressed up. The choice is yours!

While the costumes are, indeed, one of the best aspects of the New France Festival, chatting up with jovial locals and listening to the live music shows are fabulous ways to experience authentic French-speaking North American culture.

Learn: Become a Part of Living History

Travelling back in time to experience living history is one of the reasons why people from all over the world visit Québec City, and there is no better time to do that than during the New France Festival.

Watch historical reenactments and visit workshops to learn about life in New France. From traders, farmers and soldiers to the First Nations people, the festival is filled with fun and engaging activities to learn about the fascinating history of Québec.
